Can I remove the brick arch in the bedroom coming off the chimney breast?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.39 PM

Hi all, I am renovating my house, and am taking all the walls back to brick as the plaster is old and blown to pieces (as well as wavey and unsightly). It's a 1930's semi, and has chimneys in each of the rooms. In the upstairs bedroom there's an arch coming off the chimney breast and I want to remove it so the chimney is symmetrical. My question is, is this structural or simply cosmetic? And will I need to make any alterations to support where the arch once was if removed? Thanks Rob *edit (can't find how to reply to answers using my phone). - the main chimney breast goes from the floor to the ceiling in the bedroom, and the arch goes from the left hand side edge of the chimney breast, arching to touch the wall. Strange how you can't share images huh?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Is it inline with the chimney breast? i.e. on the right/left of it or across the room. Hard to say without seeing it. Rule of thumb is if you dont know, dont touch. When removing walls in a property a structural engineer should be consulted.

It would depend on whether the brick arch is structural or cosmetic, which can not be determined from the description given.
