Fit coving before or after plastering?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

Is it best to have coving fitted before the ceilings and any parts of the walls get plastered, or is it best for coving to be fitted after the plastering has been done? Or doesn't it matter either way? What are the pros and cons of both - fitting before and after plastering has been done? Who's the best trade to fit the coving - a joiner or a plasterer? It would obviously be easier if I could have one person do both the plastering and coving but I will be using a joiner at some point anyway so I would like to get people's opinions on this? Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, It`s always best to cove after the room has been plastered first as if you change your mind in the future and remove the coving you wont be left with an area unplastered at the top of your walls and edge of ceilings. The best trade to fit coving is a plasterer as its always been part of a plasterers job and also kills two jobs in one go.Joiners dont usually do coving as they usually leave coving to either a plasterer or decorator as these trades are finishing trades and coving is done near the end of a job. I would always fit coving after the room has been plastered best off leaving a couple of days after the room has been plastered to allow to dry. This will give you the best result.

The coving should always be installed after the plastering has been completed for a sharp finish. If the coving needs to be removed later, then the walls will be fully plastered.

Absolutely after plastering for the best finish. If it requires it and space and time allows, you can pre-paint the coving first before fitting and then fill/tidy up anywhere required from any coving cuts made.

I would say coving after plastering. If you ever change you mind the plaster it left to a high standard. Should be let to little or no problems

I definitely prefer to plaster before the coving has gone up, makes the job easier and cleaner. And to put the coving up will be easier on a much flatter background.

Fit the coving after the ceiling has been skimmed 1. Because if you take it down its already plastered tight to the edge, 2. No chance of the coving being stained from plaster or knocked/chipped from the plasterers trowel

Hi, fitting the coving after the room has been plastered, as this way you see the full profile of the coving, leaves a better finish, also if you end up having the ceiling plastered again in the future, your not taking the profile off the coving

Always fit coving after plastering is complete, it gives a much better finish and as to the question of who is better to fit it a plasterer or joiner? The answer is either if its just normal coving but a plasterer if its proper cast moulded plastering as a qualified plasterer can make cast coving to a specific design from scratch

Install the coving afterwards, as will ensure clean edges. A plasterer will fit them

I'd say after, if you plaster up to it you'll lose some of the thickness in the coving and it'll be a better finish.

I would recommend plastering first and giving after, that way you have nice internals behind the giving rather then just working up to it.

I would plaster first then put the coves up. Some people may do this differently but this is the preferred method by most i think. Pros and cons are the same really it doesn't matter to me witch way youd do it the results should be the same.

Coving after room has been skimmed as you will have a better result but you must allow drying time for plaster.

For the best results it is best to fit the coving after the plastering has been done. That way you get the best finish with good sharp edges and you do not loose any of the depth of the coving. Anyone can fit coving but I believe that a plasterer will give the best finish due to a understanding of how to install to the efficiently, hiding the joins and the adhesives used with their drying times. Hope this helps.

Always fit the coving after skimming both cellings and walls as this is the correct method and would turn out better. With regards on who you use will depend in your area, for example i know some plasterers will not do coving where as my self i will.

It is better to fit this post plastering - to allow for a cleaner and sharper finish right back to the ceiling edge thus eliminating any edging showing should you wish to change he coming later.... it also allows for the plasterer to completer the job a little quicker without worrying too much about the coving if there beforehand. Either trader joiner or plasterer can fit the coving.
