I plan to knock through a wall to make a kitchen diner, how can I tell if it is a load bearing wall?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.47 PM

the wall is only 1 course thick and is just short of 3.5m runs across the upstairs floor beams which are 1 complete length from end wall to end wall, the bricks are only stitched in 3 places either end and brick tied higher up, there is no wall directly above it but on the level above is a wall which has been built after the floor boards and ceilings where fitted.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The fact that there is no wall directly above doesnt really mean much. The first floor joists could well be carried by this wall.Best bet would be to get a structural engineer to take a look as he would be the only person qualified to state the size of rsj needed to carry the load currently sitting on the wall.building control would need to see these calculations too in order to sign off the work.In short,do not consider touching this wall until someone QUALIFIED to make judgement has visited your property to take a look.
