Raising ground floor joists to create more head hieght in basement

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

We would like to raise the ground floor joists to give us more head height in the basement instead of underpinning as we can’t dig down anymore. The head height is currently about 6ft so we would like to raise floor above by around 1ft ish. We have been told this can be done a few different ways ie hangers which means we don’t have to re disturb brick work however we want to make sure that obviously the most solid and long lasting way is done. It is a simple 2 up 2 down mid terrace the 2 rooms are split by a brick wall and staircase. We understand that the skirtings/Elecs And door frames will need adjusting above but still think this way would be way more cost effective that’s underpinning. What would be your suggestions on how best to do this job? Thanks in advance.

We would suggest that jiffy hangers are used and the beams are secured above with the joists sitting on the wall, as opposed to sitting off the wall on a hanger.
