Why is my tile grout darker in some places than others?
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.41 PM
Hello. My kitchen has recently been retiled using beige grout. In some places the grout has dried to a light beige, but in others there are darker patches. I don't think the grout is dirty (it was like that when the tiles were first put on the wall). Is this wet behind the tiles? And if so, what would you recommend? Thank you for your help! Ben

Hi. This could be caused by existing damp but could also be efflorescence. This is when salt held in water rises to the surface of the grout caused by too much moisture in the adhesive and potentially grouting too soon after adhesive has set or is still setting. Solution if this is the case is to wait as this can subside a little or to re-grout. Talk to your tiler. If this gets nowhere get a grout rake (cheap), remove the stained grout and reapply. I hope this helps

As the tradesman have stated above, but also I have seen this when it comes to silicone, especially in the corners, edges. When you silicone, you spray soapy water over the area prior to removal of the excess silicone. The soapy solution makes the grout wetter in those areas and therefore causes it dry out longer than the rest of the grout and can also cause efflorescence as stated above.

It could be damp but I would have noticed before tiling the wall some grouts have to be mixed dry as well as wet to get right colour pigment
