Rear garden paving invoice. Whacker hire/excess sand??

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

Hi there, We had our back garden paved and the guy doing it seems to have underquoted because of the additional work required due to the slabs we have purchased (Indian sandstone apparently they need a much heavier base and longer to set). He charged us a bit more due to additional labour hours which we didn't mind. However we are also being charged for the hire of a whacker plate. I'm no builder but I would have thought this is a fairly standard tool in laying slabs. Also halfway through he said he needed to order an additional 3t of sand and with the work almost complete, we have nearly 2t bags left. We thought he was overordering when he said it but we didn't question it as he's the builder. He generally has a good reputation but we feel he is annoyed with himself for underquoting. We've also paid for the materials ourselves. We are going to speak to him today as the job nearly finished and he wants payment but obviously there are things we are not happy with and need resolving. Can we deduct the cost of the sand from the bill as the amount ordered was on his say so. I understand maybe half a bag either way but 2t seems grossly overestimated. Also should we be charged for hire of a whacker plate? Thanks in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

My god! Everyone in this trade has a wacker plate. Sounds to me this guy hasn’t a clue. We would estimate a job and if we had to buy 2tonne of sand it’s our fault for not measuring properly! Happens all the time.

Hi there, as long as you have a really good base (type 1) underneath your patio and compacted with a heavy enough wacker plate then all standard slabs should be laid on a bed of sand and cement of 20-30mm. it would have been nice of the builder to let u know in the quote he sent you about the hire of the wacker plate or maybe it broke half way through the job. U could ask the builder to take the sand back to the builders merchants and get the money back with a refund. I'm sure that would help u both.

The hire costs should ideally be built into the original quote you received. If it was an oversite on the builders behalf he should really of advised you of this rather than adding it as an extra. With regards to the sand, as it’s bagged you can normally arrange the merchant to collect it, although they’ll deduct a carriage charge from your refund. Alternatively you may be able to come to an arrangement with the builder that he buys it off you as he’ll likely be able to use it else where in the not to distant future. He may have a storage issue so may ask if it’s ok to leave it with you till that time also. Had he supplied the sand himself, then I’d be very suprised to hear the builder had so easily left it behind.
