What type of plywood to use?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.39 PM
Hi there, I am looking a laying vinyl plank flooring (Quick Step Click) in my lounge. I plan to put down 18mm ply as I want to soundproof impact noise to the floor below. I presume this will make a difference or is there something better to use? Which ply would be best to use? Exterior, then Sheathing, then Structural. Would exterior ( the cheapest option ) be sufficient or should I use a higher grade? Thanks in advance. Mark

The thickness of the ply isn’t a huge deal, as long as your screw it every 200mm it should be good, just be careful of pipes and wires below choose your screw length carefully. To help sound proof more you could buy a sound proof under lay and tape all joints up.

Im not sure that putting a layer of ply down will make all that much difference to vibrations traveling through the floor.
Would think that a layer or two of solid sound insulation board would be much better layed direct on top of what I would presume are existing floorboards?

you must use sp101 or fg1 ply, and you will need to use the livyn underlay under the lvt click you should never fit direct to the subfloor unless you choose the dryback which is bonded direct to the flooring grade ply.
