Gas Works

Can gas pipes be covered/boxed?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

I am planning on knocking through from my box room into a storage room next door and taking half of the available space for a closet/wardrobe for the box room. At the front of the storage room are the gas and electricity meters/fusebox and the new partition wall would come after these. The gas pipe for the flat runs around the room and then goes through the stud wall cavity pass the box room, pass the bathroom and into the boiler and kitchen. Would I be allowed to box the gas pipes that would be within the new closet? If not can I paint them? They are old pipes within a ex council flat from the 60s. Thanks Sandra

This is partially correct. Any pipework hidden in ducting, e.g. "boxed in" must be ventilated at both the upper and lower levels. This is to prevent minor undetectable leakage at the joints from building up in a sealed "box". The ventilation allows this build up to dissipate naturally. There is a specific calculation which defines the amount of ventilation required. If this is running up a wall into the ceiling, you can vent into the floor space above the room as there is enough "advantageous air" to dissipate this build up. Hope that helps

any gas pipes boxed in must be ventilated to allow for the escape of any gas leak that may occur.

Yes you can box gas pipes in you can also paint! As for boxing them in you could use plastic C-section with brackets for fixing and corner pieces or box in with ply as long as it is screwed for easy access! Hope this helps. Ryan
