Possible repair to water supply pipe

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

Hi, not sure if this shoudl go in plumbling but as it involves digging up a concrete drive I'll post it here. Affinity Water contractors have been to look at my external supply pipes as I have the sound of running water in kitchen/bathroom pipe but no indication of a leak in my house or outside surfaces. Having done some digging themselves, they tell me (though cannot guarantee this is the case) that it is due to a leak in the supply between my house and the mains, which will mean locating the leak (in some hopefully clever way) and then (I guess) digging up the drive to get to the pipe and repair it. Do I approach plumbers or groundworkers for quotes? I'm in North Essex (in case location makes a difference to potential cost).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I think a perfectly competent ground work should be able to carry out the work for you. They would need to locate the leak. Turn your supply off from the road or near the road, usually where your water meter is. Then cut out the broken pipe, use to couplers and a piece of matching pipe and join the lot altogether.

You can also ask for your supply pipe to be gas checked. This involves removing the meter, closing the internal ST and ST at the meter. Then a gas is injected into the pipe. This is traced from above and gives an indication of the leak position. The other method is to use a leak noise correlator on each end. This works better if the pipe is metallic or PVC, MDPE doesn't make a lot of noise. If the pipe isn't very long, then its usually just as easy to disconnect at both ends and simply lay a new pipe.

I Would highly recommend private contractors or tradesmen as the water board can be costly. Also what no one has mentioned is its a legal requirement to be trained and hold the required licence to work on a water supply. And can incur large cost if someone unqualified should contaminate the supply through lack of knowledge
