Re-caulking a shower room - do I have to do the entire room?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.38 PM
My question - if I re-caulk the side of a shower room, do I have to re-caulk every side that that side touches? And the sides that those touch? Image is below. Some of it looks good, and if possible, I'd like a strategy to avoid having to redo that. Old shower room (no dedicated shower cubicle, the whole room is just a shower + loo) needs re-caulking because the caulk has cracked and water can get into the wall now. https://i.imgur.com/ttV0MMp.jpg

You will get the best finish if you redo everything, but that's not always practical or necessary and you can certainly only redo the bits that need redoing!
The main thing is to remove ALL the cracked / old sealant and ensure that any loose sealant is properly removed. There are special chemicals (sealant eaters) to help with this - WD40 also works, but I find it is best to scrape as much as you can manually first (ie with Unibond Sealant Smoother & Remover Tool) - to prevent residue chemical damaging the new sealant.
Immediately after applying the new sealant use a decent sealant tool (ie Vitrex Flexi Tip Sealant Smoother) to make sure that the sealant is neat and also that you blend it into the old sealant as much as you can.
Good Luck!!
