Why ceiling floorboard makes dreadful noise

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.57 PM

Can anyone advise what to do about ceiling flooring that makes noise. Whenever am in the lounge or dinning area above me are the bedrooms, anyone can literally hear every step loudly and even bed movement. It's becoming worse and worse as days goes bye. The flooring is all carpet and the building wall itself is concrete not bricks. What is the problem and what can I do to resolve it?

Hi Tammy It would depend on the type of noise it's making. At a guess and without looking if it's creaking that would indicate that the floor boards above are not secured properly. They would need to be located individually and screwed down into the ceiling joists. However if that is not the case and it's an old house, potentially insulating between the ceiling joists with kingspan type insulation would dull the hollow sound in the void between the underside of your floor boards and top side of your ceiling. Also it would insulate your room further and save on heating bills. Another suggestion would be over board your ceiling with soundproof plasterboarding, then scrim. I hope this is helpfull to you. Kindest regards Dean
