Fixing a sheila’s Maid airer to utility room

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

Hi. I want to attach an old fashioned sheila’s maid type airer to my utility room ceiling joist to dry washing. It’s 57” in length. I’m just after an idea of how difficult a job this is. Many thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This isn't a difficult job but you will need a quite a high ceiling to give the clearance you will need and therefore a good set of step ladders to fit. I suggest a pilot hole ,probably about 5mm and and then you should be able to screw the pulleys in by hand . You may need a surprisingly large amount of preferably new sash cord, ideally so you can lock it off at a knot when fully up , leaving plenty to lower down to possibly another knotted lock off position to allow loading . Ideally the lock off point will be at roughly 45 decrees going in line with the dryers to give you good clearance of the loaded rails- this will all become clearer when you start setting it up. I suggest position the hangers at 1/5 and 4/5th of length. Make sure the joist you are screwing in to is sound as its going to be carrying a lot of weight. If in doubt consider spreading the weight with a length of 50 x 100mm timber screwed in to the joist with 4.5 x 80mm screws if this can be done sympathetically . A great piece of kit and hopefully will save you much tumble drying
