Bricklaying & Repointing

Crumble brick wall

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

Hi, I have got a 1930s semi detached house with solid walls. There is about 1 meter high brick wall between render and ground/driveway which looks very poor. Some of the brick faces has fallen off and the mortar between them is like a powder or sand. In some places there is even about 3 cm holes without mortar between bricks. In the next two years I'm planning to put new render on my house. My questions are: should I repoint this wall as soon as possible or two years time doesn't make big difference? Should this part of the wall be rendered or painted or left as it is after repointing? There is also a one inch gap between the wall and cement driveway so I recon the water could damage the mortar underneath after that long time? Am I right and should also have a look on the foundation or just repoint visible wall? Sorry for such amount of questions but hopefully someone could help. Cheers

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

re pointing will not stop the bricks crumbling, bricks crumble for all sorts of reasons, frost damage, old age poor manufacture, there are 2 things you can do, render them after raking out the loose cement or replace them, i would suggest this done asap as it will only get worse, as for the gap between the house and drive then you should fill that to stop anymore water getting in, mortar should be used due to the width of the gap
