Plastering & Rendering

Plastering job done very bad (skimming over Artex and replacing covings)

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

Hello, Recently we had a skim over Artex done by two plasterers from this website. We let it dry properly and now can clearly see and feel the tips of the Artex showing through, some parts of the ceiling are wavy and there is quite a few small holes. Also the ceiling seems to be bowing a bit. They also replaced old covings with new ones, but none of the corners (except one) align, on some parts the plaster is cracking, the gaps between covings in some corners are huge and there's a lot of plaster around and over covings, so there's no 90 degree angle at some places (it will be difficult to paint as I want different colour for coving and walls), and holes in some places under covings. Would you kindly advice how to fix this, please? We paid the gentlemen everything they wanted and extra for repairing the walls after taking out old covings left some holes (there are still some left), but we were afraid to speak up unfortunately. I'm reluctant to have the gentlemen back because they left a huge mess in the bathroom (plaster in sink, pieces if plaster in toilet, etc.), were quite rude (told us we'd be mad to take down the old covings that I didn't like and were not done nicely, smelled of alcohol and played music extremely loud). The plasterer we had before was an absolute star - he did fantastic job, left everything spotless clean, so it wasn't a problem, but now I'm livid, shocked and in tears over this job. Apologies for the moaning, I will appreciate any advice given. Maria

unfortunately you only really have two choices either get the originals plasterers back to correct there mess, this might be difficult to achieve as one you've no confidence in them two a don't think they are capable of achieving what you want and three you've already paid them. or right it of and get the chap you where happy with to come in and fix there mess. good luck Alex.

Hi I’m afraid the only way to fix the problems is to have job again, the after should have been sanded down or the bigger pointed pieces chipped off then sealed with pva and skimmed or the better way to do it was to over board the ceiling with new boards and skim,as for the coving sounds just like a poor job,the mitres on the corners can be tricky unless you have a proper mitre box for coving, your best option is to have ceiling re skimmed and coving taken off and done properly

I personally overboard any artex ceilings as some could contain asbestos so I wouldn't want to be scraping any of the artex off and then skim it.
