Widen internal conservatory door

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

I have a conservatory and would like to replace the existing sliding door between the house and conservatory with a bifold. As part of this I want to widen the opening as much as possible, about 6 inches one side and 12 inches the other. As this used to be an external door before the previous owners built the conservatory there will clearly be a lintel above the door to be addressed when widening. Is there a chance a 20 year old house was built with a lintel covering this wider opening? If not, how hard a job would it be for a glazing company to carry out this work and is it indeed worth it - when a bifold can fit in existing space in about a day? Would a structural engineer be needed as part of the job?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The existing lintel would only have a bearing of around 150mm If your making the opening wider you would need to replace the lintel A structural engineer will tell you the load above the door and what size lintel you can use To save all the mess and knocking about your probably best of using the opening you have now if it will work
