Fitting new fire doors into existing frames
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM
Hello, We have to fit fire doors following a loft conversion. We plan to put in new fire doors but leave the frames in place. We need to have intumescent strips fitted. Is it better to have the new fire doors routed for the strips or can they go in the frame ? Roughly how long does it take to route a door for the strips ? Is this a job any joiner can do or do we need a specialist ? Thanks for your help.

Ok first of all the strips need to go in to the door, the whole idea is to stop the smoke and heat expanding the door and fire getting through. The door stops need to be replaced as they will not be fire safe. And new hinges and door closers need to be fitted.
As to regards if anyone can router the doors, yes anyone can BUT you have to have the right depth and the width of the cut has to be snug to the strip. A door can be routed in about 10min with the strips fitted, if you have the right equipment. Hope this helps and good luck.
