Replacing traditional boiler with combi - replace all radiator pipes due to previous damp?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

I've just purchased a flat in a block built in the 1970s. I don't think much maintenance work has been done in the flat since being built if that helps with my query. Four gas engineers have quoted me to fit a new combi boiler, replacing the traditional boiler system. The water pressure as is fine as is with the old boiler system. Two engineers have recommended that the entire radiator circuit pipes should be replaced, as they believe that a combi with the current piping system won't hold the water pressure adequately. They also cited that the damp patches in the living room (internal walls so not rising damp) were probably caused by the radiator pipes but can't say for sure. The current copper piping is in the concrete screed so not easy to check. We will put new rads in each room. The other two engineers say this isn't necessary and I'm very confused. I'm willing to replace the radiator circuit if it's necessary. I don't want to be wasting thousands of pounds when it's not needed though. Many thanks in advance.

I would in this situation carry out a pressure test on the entire heating circuit including radiators, if the test fails and there is no obvious signs of leakage then we can be pretty confident that there are serious issues with the integrity of your existing heating circuit in particular the pipework buried in the screed. If however it passes the pressure test then you will have made a considerable cost saving and will have to look elsewhere for the cause of the damp patches in your living room. This pressure test should be not be hurried and I would leave it under test overnight!

Well if you've just bought it I'm sure the damp has been there for a really long time,if it was a leak im sure would of done more damage than damp, but also a pressure test will guarantee you if you wana pay someone to do one, either that or you might not be the only flat! I also definitely recommend getting a combi install if you can afford it to. Less hassle in long run.
