Ask a questionInsulation
Should we insulate our solid brick wall with an internal insulation system/dry lining?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.38 PM
1930's detached house, being fully renovated and extended. Architects have specified internal insulation system on the existing solid brick (9inch) exterior walls but we are worried that the system will eat into our floor space and make the affected rooms feel smaller. Is it a good idea to insulate the exterior walls internally when renovating the whole house or is it a waste of money and effort? thank you

Insulation, internal can be a good way of reducing heat loss, reducing dampness and keeping down utility bills but I would only recommend certain rooms and walls, (mainly weathered walls) as you have quite rightly answered that rooms would feel smaller. I recommend at least a 30mm build up, internally.
On a nine inch brick wall I would recommend 60mm plus of Insulated Render externally to gain a full saving on utilities bills.
