Loft Conversion

Loft Conversion bedroom too hot in summer - Can i install gable vents to help?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

We had a loft conversion done in our end terraced house back in 2003, our house was built in 1910 and still has original roof which has no underlay, just the old style slate cement/lime.....had nothing but trouble with the contractor even though he was highly recommended, ended up kicking them off the job and had get another contractor to complete unfinished works which were just electrics and some plastering... The conversion was for my daughters bedroom but my long term problem is that its too hot in summer and too cold in winter, i am aware that this could be an insulation issue. i have checked under the ceiling and there is foiled back plasterboard, we have soffit vents and a ridge vent but im not sure how to check if they are doing there job. I have installed a gable vent today and am waiting to see if this helps along with a wall mounted fan. the velux is open most of the summertime but closed at night due to noise.... My questions are as follows and i will appreciate any help. 1 - would an extractor fan installed on the gable wall help draw warm stale air out? 2 - i know you can change the wiring on an extractor fan to reverse, would this work to supply the room with fresh air from outside to work in conjunction with the extractor fan(1)? If above would make no difference, would a gable vent work, help? Thanks for taking time to read this .

Your action will give minimal effect, in a long run need to consider putting proper insulation type of PIR King-span , Eco build to give the required by Building Control UV value securing normal conditions in the conversion.
