Unsure about New Felt Roof, Spongy under Sun light?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.57 PM

Is it normal for the top layer felt to feel spongy under prolonged direct sunlight? Its the day after job completion and I noticed it while walking on to tidy around. So, much so that when pressed down with my thumb the mineral moves and feels 'gooey'. Also when im sweeping small particles of mineral are picked up which makes me reluctant to even sweep now in fearr that ill ruin the surface! Its a grey colored top layer.. ive read a a green mineral top is preferred option should i have requested a new top layer? This is a walk on flatj terrace roof. Thanks in advance for any advise.

1.If your felt feels as if it has air pockets in it it either hasn't been burnt to the sheet underneath or deck properly.2. There maybe water getting underneath if it feels gooey. 3. The colour of the mineral felt should be customers choose. 4. Me personally I wouldn't put mineral felt on a flat roof that will be walked on(easily punctured)

It should not feel spongy although the felt will go soft in direct sunlight, the mineral finish on the top is to help protect it from uv rays, the colour of the mineral doesn't affect the performance you sweeping the mineral or walking on it (depending on your footwear) in hot conditions will affect the performance and lifespan of your roof, there are many different systems to turn a flat roof in to a balcony that can be installed over your new roof. kind regards

You could ask your roofer to lay promenade tiles over the mineral felt. This would help with foot traffic.

Felt roofs do get a bit gooey if the temperature is really high and in direct sunlight as it warms the bitumen back up. As said by another I would recommend putting promenade tiles as a pathway. You get them in all different colours and they can interlock together in any pattern. Regards rob.
