Reducing Wardrobe Opening Height to Fit Sliding Doors

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

Hi All, Could anyone advise on the most common and effective way of reducing the opening height for fitting standard height wardrobe sliding doors? Standard doors I have are suited to fit an opening of 2260mm whereas I have openings of roughly 2330mm and 2311mm. So there's no much in it. I was thinking of build down the ceiling with timber and then using in fill panels screwed to the timber to create the reduction... Any advice from the pro's would be much appreciated. Thanks,

You are correct - Use timber fixed into the ceiling joists to reduce the overall height, or fixed to the floor - whichever is easier. Be very careful to check for Water/Electric services above or below before fixing. Depending on the difference to be made up, you can choose the timber to suit, although it might need to be planed or packed out to get to the exact opening size you need. once fitted, you can install cover fillets/décor panels to hide the timber. Hope that helps.

Youve pretty much nailed the answer within your question. Fix a 2x1 batton thats the full length of the door opening if possible fix into the joists above. If this isnt possible decent plaster board fixings should be enough to hold a batton. Ideally tho get into roof space and fix some noggins inbetween the joists where its to be fixed. Fix noggins to joist with screws and a good fixing sould be made. A noggin is a piece of timber cut to size between joists.3x2 or 4x2. If you then fixed a length of 4x2 to the 2x1 batton using clearance holes to take the screws. Screw together measure from floor guide rail to required height and mark a level line. Cut this line. And refix securely. Fix top guide rail. Install doors. Double check lower guide rail is level as this will affect how the doors sit in their final closed position.

As in previous answers you understand the principle. what i will say is that depending on the ceiling you will need to scribe using a pencil and compass if the ceiling is like a snake. If your in an newer build ceilings tend to be a lot better so might not need to scribe and cut straight from edge to edge and caulk if needs be. Place your facia piece with clamps and go along with your scribing and trace the outline on you facia piece and cut with a jigsaw for best results. good luck, happy to help LUX Joinery
