How far should an oven be from a back wall to allow heat to escape?

We have today pulled out our oven and the wall (paper) behind it is all burnt and scorched. The wiring of the oven is melted and has come loose. There seems to be grease/dirt etc behind the oven. The oven is not on an outside wall, and the hood above it has not worked for some time, so heat is not able to get out I assume. Obviously we need to get a new oven, but is the cause of this burning/scorching the oven being too close to the wall? How can we stop this from happening with a new oven?
Update: should have mentioned earlier wall behind is timber.

Hi ruth_841 i believe it is a 300 mm distance to allow heat to escape from the back of an oven especially if its got the hob built in to the oven, if its a cupboard oven that sits under the worktop and hob built into the worktop then there shoulden't be a problem with burning in the back as most ovens if they are sat under worktops relieve the heat out of the sides/ front if your worried you might want to carry out investigations.
hope this helps,

Hello, on most new cookers I have installed there is a lip at the top with often holes / grille to alow heat to escape and to stop the cooker from being pushed to close to the wall. New ovens don’t get anywhere near as hot as old ones because they are much better insulated. I would definitely call an Electrician to replace the melted cable and check the installation is safe.

A minimum distance of 45mm is ideal. But depends if the back wall are made of combustible materials or not. They need supply of air for safety reasons. Check the manufacture manuals, they advise you how to install it. The electrical connection of the hob and the oven must be installed separately and to let easy remove oven from the unit. Common practice is to install a grid switch to isolate all the apliances, they incorporate double pole switches to power them on/off. Making easier when the electrical inspection will come.
Best Luck.
