Painting & Decorating

Possible Lead Paint in Edwardian House

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.38 PM

I wonder if anyone could give us some advice? We moved in to an Edwardian house last May and we need to start decorating. We suspect all of the woodwork may have lead paint underneath a more recent layer paint. We have 2 small children in the house. What should we do? Many thanks.

Hi. I understand your concerns. There are various types of lead that have historically been used as an additive to paint. The phasing out of this has been mostly achieved by voluntary agreements. But it wasnt until 1992 that white lead was banned here under legislation from defra. There are various test kits that you can purchase to test for lead in paint. I can explain my approach to painted woodwork in period properties. I err in the belief that there is highly likely to be lead in the paint, maybe not in the newer layers but certainely in the older layers and especially the primer/undercoats (that historically had the highest lead content) If im preparing the woodwork and i am sanding it then i take the less is more approach. Very light sanding with fine sandpaper, hand sanding not mechanical, i look to not 'break through' the newest layer, just enough to flatten the exsisting finish and provide a key for the new coatings. Another approach is to use wet and dry paper. That way if done correctly there should not be any dust created(that can become air bourne) then dispose of the used paper, and cloths to clean after etc carefully. Another approach is to use 'super grip' primers. All the main players have their versions of these but the origional is still the best for me, zinsser b.i.n. The painted woodwork still needs to be carefully prepared before using these but that involves making sure it is clean and free from contaminants. So a strong sugar soap solution then clean water rinse a must.
