New wall light may or may not be causing the other lights not to work
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.38 PM
I’ve taken a light of the wall in the hopes of fitting a new one. However after removing the light we realised we couldn’t drill into to the wall without filling the old gap first. The wires from the old light are now hanging exposed from the wall. I turned on the breaker for the upstairs lights to go to bed, However none of the lights are now working. The breakers are not tripping if you flick them up they stay there. But still the lights will not turn on. Will this go away when the new light has been fitted, Or has something gone very wrong?

Lighting circuits are connected using a radial circuit method, which means that from your fuse board runs a cable suppling each individual light until reaching the last one. Unfortunately, you might be disconnect the one that supply the others, breaking the circuit in two parts. The sensible thing is to call a competent electrician to help you and repair the fault. He needs to test the cable to determine which is the supply and which is the cable that goes to the switch. Also, a test determine if the circuit is in safe condition to continuous use.
Good Luck and take care with live cables hanging from the wall.
