Kitchen Fitting

Week 7 of having of our new kitchen fit - When will it end?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

Hi there, We bought a new kitchen through Wren, and decided to go with one of their own approved fitters - assuming it would be quicker and less hassle than employing a fitter we sourced ourselves. The fitter seemed like a nice, genuine & knowledgeable guy when he came round to measure up, so we asked him to quote for some supplementary work; tiling, painting, some basic electrical work and new flooring (removing tiles and fitting lino). We were happy with the quote, so decided to proceed with him for both the kitchen fit and the additional work. Both Wren and the fitter said the work would take 2 weeks, but we suspected it might be more like 3-4 weeks - allowing for the additional bits & pieces and any unexpected problems. The dry fit did in fact take 4 weeks to complete, as the floor was more of an issue than first anticipated. Underneath the tiles was about 3-4 inches of concrete, so that had to be dug up and built back up with latex, which incurred a small and fairly reasonable increase to the supplementary cost. We were happy with both the fitting of the kitchen and the new flooring, so all that remained was the decorative work and finishing touches. The fitter pressured us into signing the kitchen off with Wren, so he could be paid from them, and contractually he'd seemed to have fulfilled that side of things, so after a close inspection I signed it off. The fitter assured me he would finish everything else off pretty quickly and that we were nearly done. 2 weeks have passed since then, we're now entering week 7, and the fitter has hardly been round. He's been juggling a number of jobs from day one, and has clearly moved on to other things - in his mind it's pretty much there. I just can't seem to get him back to the finish the job off, and he's ignoring my calls and text messages. On the few occasions I have spoke to him, he's made some pretty lame excuses for not coming over, fobbed me off and at times - outright lied to me about what he's going to do. Many promises have been broken and we've sat in waiting for him on a few occasions, and he hasn't turned up. I'm starting to run out of ideas, and wondered if anybody had any advice? I'm getting to the stage where I'm thinking about asking him to pick up his remaining bits & pieces, and just calling it a day. I'd be happy for somebody else to finish it off. We've already given him 65% of the money for the supplementary work, so he's not owed a huge amount of money, but these are the things that are still outstanding; - Grouting & sealant applied to kitchen tiles - Splashback protector fitted above hob - 2 x small holes in wall to be filled - 2 x coats of white vinyl paint on walls & ceiling - 3 x new plug socket frontals (which we bought ourselves in the end) - 2 x threshold strips (in front & rear doors of kitchen) What should I do?

Hi dj1982 I read what you have written, and you have my sympathy, and this type of situation I come regularly with some of clients, having taken the wrong decision by engaging the wrong/cheapest builder...!! I might sound harsh (sometimes), but I will try to be as frank as I can, and please excuse my honest expression. It is what I call: ''The Price Trap'' being the ignorance of clients when it comes in choosing the cheapest priced builders, with no official professional UK qualifications and recognition, (also stay away from builders, giving you previous ''good references''...most of them are negotiated, in exchange on old job price discounts) in the hope of doing the job cheaply..!! 1. I do not want to ask you if you chose to go with the lowest quote or not? 2. Nor, if you engaged a builder to undertake all your project from A - Z? 3. Nor, if presumably you undertook to engage various trades for your project, hoping to have the job done cheaper? 4. Nor, if you have engaged the services of a professional (Architect, Designer)? 5. And finally Nor, if you have engaged the services of a company with UK recognized construction memberships & qualifications (FMB, LABC, ect), for future default comebacks, and any warranty on their workmanship or reputation? Whatever your decision was, it is of no use, Now comes the important decision how to complete your project, and the answer is only one: Now it will cost you more money to complete for your piece of mind, and have the job completed correctly..!! Except if you hope and wait your chosen builder, ever decides to come back to complete (probably not for the same o/s money), of if you place him on notice, by sending him an email (I presume you have his email)..!! My suggestion is to go ahead with the last two points mentioned above No: 4 or 5, if he does not turn up after you served him the notice. Good luck and let me know if I can be of any help any more. Hi there! My advice would be to find a new person to put right what hasn't been finished asap. It does not sound like your fitter appreciates the work (4 weeks is more than enough) that you have given to him and is on your side. There will always be work in the future that you would like carried out (bathrooms, kitchens etc) so I would find someone to stick with throughout that will always deliver and make you feel like there priority. Hope this helps!
