Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.38 PM

Currently floor is carpeted. Underneath is hardboard tiles presumably to level a concrete floor at the base of a modern house. What are the issues if tiling on top of hardboard What options are there for floor prep before new tiles go down.?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Hardboard ( or high density fibreboard) is not a good subfloor for tiling on, it expands and contracts at different rates to tiles and swells up when it gets wet, it will eventually crack or fail regardless of the tile adhesive and grout used, rip it up and level the concrete with a self levelling compound if necessary.

Don't tile onto board. Remove boards and Self level as mentioned above. A decoupling mat (Ditra) would be a good idea too.
