Should there be soil directly against the house

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.17 PM

I live in a Victorian terrace house with the typical kitchen/bathroom extension. In the process of redesigning the back garden, I have lifted paving slabs. This has exposed soil right up against the house. Firstly, is this a problem (I am assuming it is). Secondly, how best to deal with it. Ideally I do want a bed under the wall but obviously done in a way to protect the wall, not cause damp etc. Thank you for your time and advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, Soil up againts your house is fine aslong as it is sitting lower than your damp proof course witch should be situated in the mortar joint under the row where your air brick is. I hope this helps. Lewiz.

its not unusual to have soil up to your wall ,some people would prefer a nice decorative border of coloured stones to separate soil from wall but as previously mentioned if its below the damp course its not an issue.
