Do I need new joints and floorboards before replacing carpet with luxury vinyl?

I live in a flat in a converted Victorian building. The flooring is old and floorboards are creaky. I'd like to replace the carpets with vinyl tiles. I have to make sure the flooring is properly soundproofed so downstairs flat isn't disturbed by impact noise. Do I need to get new joists and floorboards or it is sufficient to put plywood (and soundproof underlay) on top of old boards?

Hi
I wouldn't think you need to replace the floor joists themselves but if as you say the floorboards are old and creaky then it might be better to take them up and replace with new 22mm t&g chipboard flooring or plywood. This will enable you to check the floor joists are okay, make a note of where any pipes or cables are so you don't screw through them when overboarding and give you the chance to put in some good quality sound insulation as well. If you do decide to just put insulation and plywood on top of the existing floor just be aware that you will probably have to trim down any doors and it will give you a different floor level to adjoining rooms so might need a threshold

Hi
You shouldn’t need to get new joists, although with a Victorian property they may have some rot worth getting them looked at just in case. Very simple just take a few of the boards up and look at the joist. I would do a few random places.
That said if the are all good then I would just make sure all the floor boards are acted down tight before boarding with ply. Hope that helps.
