Kitchen Fitting

Looking for a solution to install cooker under narrow window (with a wooden frame).

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.39 PM

I've recently bought my own home. I purchased a cooker however on delivery was informed that they wouldn't be able to install it because there is a window with flammable materials above where the cooker would go. This is the only space in the kitchen to put the cooker (and the previous owners had their cooker there). It's a narrow tall window with a wooden frame and doesn't open (don't have a curtain there either). There is another much larger window in the kitchen which opens and that's above the sink so no problems there. I'm trying to work out what to do about the narrow window and have had conflicting advice about what would be allowable and safe. Options currently under consideration: - cutting out the wooden frame and replacing with uPVC (however is that allowable?) - covering it with a metal sheet (not the most attractive option) - redoing the kitchen and relocating the cooker- however this might be quite difficult because the kitchen is small so there aren't many options which aren't under windows, plus the current location is where the gas pipe feeds to and the electric point is (we had the house rewired just after we bought it) so presumably that would need to be sorted in some way as well? I'd really like to get on with sorting it out in some way I don't have plans to redo the kitchen at the moment- all funds went on buying the house. If anyone has suggestions/advice for us that would be really helpful. Also, I've been trying to look for the regulations which would give us the official line on all this but I don't really know where to look. Thanks for your help.

Hi there! I believe there is two other options you could explore. Firstly you could take the window sill out and tile the area. Or the other option is to change to an induction hob which only heats the pan itself, the hob remains cool. They are also much more energy efficient. I am assuming your appliance is a free standing cooker oven which means you would also have to accompany it with an interrogated oven within a 600mm base unit. I hope this helps!

Remove the flammable materials, and use a ceramic tile instead. It’s not ideal having a cooker under a window for splash back purposes. Maybe a rejig in the kitchen design? With out pics, it’s hard to judge. Make sure your cooker is chain-linked to the wall too. This is stop tipping if weight is applied on an open door etc.
