Do I need aqua board on top of sand and cement render?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

I have sand and cement render with water proof additive SBR with PVA on top for bonding Do I still need to add aquapanels on top of this in the shower area? Or would the sand and cement render with SBR be enough?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would suggest to fit aqua panel board but you can also use a paintable membrane. Mapei or Bal shower kit will do the job.

It wouldn’t work against you but it’s not necessary. How ever I would recommend that you use a sealer made for tiling rather than pva

The board will add to the strength of the build and give you a barrier to the PVA. When you prime the board, use SBR, not PVA.

Hi Sarah, If the sand and cement render is new (very unlikely) and in sound condition I would prime it then tile it as it is, if it is crumbly and old I would knock it off and board it, PVA has no place in the bathroom as it goes sloppy if it gets wet, also there are cheaper (but not inferior) products out there than aqua panel, you should get a Tiler to have a look for you he will be able to give you better advice after looking at the job !
