AIR VENT....can I block it in or cover it up? Advice please!!!

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

Ok I live in a house in Warminster which is nearly two hundred years old. Outside to the front of the house is an air vent with a metal grate over it. Inside you can see the thickness of the wall (which is really thick) and the outside grate. Well in the winter it is extremely cold and draughty because of this vent. It's in the front room. I have gas central heating and a log burner. I see no reason for this vent and would like it professional blocked up or turned into a window to allow more light in. Also I live on a busy road so not only is it draughty but it also let's a lot of car noise in. Any help or recommendations as what to do would be mostly appreciated. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi lizzy, The air vent will be providing ventilation for your log burner. If there is not enough fresh air the combustion of the log burner will deteriorate and it will produce carbon monoxide. This carbon monoxide could leak into the room if not ventilated correctly. This all depends on the KW rating of your stove though. If it is under 5KW then then no ventilation is required but anything over, then ventilation is a must. Hope this helps.
