Tiling

Can you tile straight on plasterboard?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

The plaster in my bathroom had blown so we stripped it back to brick. If we plasterboard it again can we tile straight on to instead of plastering it first? Thank you

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, yes plasterboard is ideal for tiling on, just use plasterers scrim tape over the joints where the plasterboard is butted together and then you’re grout won’t crack if a tile joint lands on a plasterboard joint (my bathroom is still in good condition nearly 17 years later !)

Its also common for grout to crack, and normal plasterboard to suck water through, leading to mould and damp issues in the wall. I would suggest to plaster the wall to protect the plasterboard

other than tile backer board platerboard is fine to tile it holds more weight than a plastered board so leave unskimmed i would recommend somekind of tanking paint in wet areas like shower area but otherwise plasterboard and scrimmed joints are fine
