Wifi controlled plugs and RCD issue

When using wifi controlled plugs with an RCD, any command given to the wifi unit (in this case Alexa), switched off the wifi plug correctly but also trips the RCD. I presume the RCD sees this as a voltage drop and acts accordingly, which means the wifi command to switch the plug back on, must be preceeded by re-enabling the RCD, which effectly renders the use of the wifi usage useless. Any ways around this ? I don't want to remove the RCD, as the socket is serving outside electrics.

Hi,
An RCD would not see any volt-drop, in the simplest terms they work by monitoring the current flowing into the circuit and then back out. If the difference of the current flowing in and out is too large then the RCD trips.
(The first law of thermodynamics, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. So the energy must be going somewhere else!)
Removing the RCD would not solve the issue, it would only serve to hide what could be a large problem.
These are a large number of reasons that the RCD could be tripping, I've mentioned a couple below.
1) Faulty WiFi socket
2) High earth leakage on the circuit, when the Wifi plug is turned on this is increased and causes the RCD to trip.
3) Could also be an issue on the circuit itself that only shows up when a load is attached.
4) Unlikely but possible - Faulty RCD.
Can you try the WiFi on another circuit to rule out the plug? If it is still tripping on a completely different circuit and RCD then it is most likely the plug itself.
If it works fine then the best thing to do would call an electrician in to investigate further.

there are two types of RCDs, one is called passive and the other is called active. The passive one stays in the set position when the power is switched off and back on again. The active one trips when the power is switched off. Active RCDs tend to be used as plug in RCD adapters or the ones fitted to extension leads.
You will struggle to find a passive RCD to plug into your wifi socket. However if you had an RCD installed at your consumer unit then the circuit would be protected.
