Do I keep my old skirting boards
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.37 PM
I am renovationing a 1901 terrace and I am having a back bedroom replasterd The skirting boards are ok but need the paint stripping. Is it worth the hassle of stripping the paint from them (and can this be done after the plastering) or is it best to just rip it all off and put new skirting on once plastered? I’m not sure if the skirting is original or not, it’s quite a soft wood, possibly pine

If it was me I would have a go and see how easy the paint came off. It will most probably be labour intensive and will be quicker to rip it all off and start again. If they are found to be original I would spend the time stripping the paint off. If not why not choose something you like to replace.

I would take them off before the plasterers start so they don't plaster over the top edge. If they are nice and an interesting profile it may be worth keeping them, but if your not fussed or they are plain take them off and skip them.

If they have a peculiar profile or one you particuarily like. Then this can be replicated by joinery companies witb the right equipment. They only need a sample, or a scoping visit. Ive had this done a few times in victorian properties that ive worked in.

You can buy MDF skirting board covers that just sit over your old ones. A rebate is taken out of the back to allow them to sit flush with the wall. It just means the skirting will be a bit wider.
