Build cabinet/entertainment area in unused blocked fireplace

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.37 PM

When I bought a terraced property, the fireplace was already blocked with some sort of plasterboard and ventilation strip in it. Can I build a entertainment cabinet in this fireplace? Would chimney need any work to be completely blocked or was it normally already done when fireplace opening was blocked? What kind of tradesman I would need to contact for this work? Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Jigar, Most good builders should be able to help with this. It might require opening up the builders opening just like you would do if you were getting a wood burner installed, maybe removing some bricks and the fire back may still be behind the plasterboard. The lintel may also need moving up depending on its position and a vent will still need to be installed to allow air to circulate in the stack, likely by installing a register plate across the opening. Hope this helps, Jim Chim-in-ey
