Chimney & Fireplace

Is it wise to vent an inactive fireplace above an active one?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

Our 1930s house just bought has an active woodburner in living room with proper flueliner all the way up to the top. However the fireplace in the bedroom above has been blocked off and no vent. Weighing up the risk of damp versus risk of lethal fumes coming into the bedroom! What do pros normally suggest in this situation? The original installer was HETAS but no longer in business. Many thanks

all in active fireplaces should be capped on the roof & vented at room level to prevent damp, you have a liner in place on the wood burner which is designed to direct all the fumes up the chimney in use so where are the fumes going to come from, the only way you are likely to get and leakage is if the wood burner has been fitted incorrectly. good luck alex
