Mount a boiler onto a block wall or stud wall and baton?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.37 PM

We’re currently having a garage conversion. The combi boiler is mounted onto the external block wall. Our builder originally said this was ok and they would put plasterboard and insulation around it so we didn’t have to move the boiler, and it would just be set back into the wall (which we were happy with) However, he’s now saying we need to get a gas engineer to move the boiler forward 3 inches so they can insulate and plasterboard behind it. It would mean that the boiler will be mounted onto the plasterboard and batons instead, which doesn’t sound as safe to me. What would other builders/ gas engineers recommend? Leaving it mounted on the block wall or relocating it? Thanks

Certain boiler manufacturers as part of there installation procedures require that the boiler be mounted to a non-combustible material, plasterboard meets that requirement. As long a the boiler can be securely fixed to the batons behind the plasterboard which is capable of the load bearing weight of the boiler then I see no issues. However this will involve employing a Gas Safe engineer to undertake the minor relocation works. Most important! NB: Ensure your builder allows the Gas engineer to remove the boiler before he commences his aspect of works first.
