Screeding over painted concrete

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

I have an internal carport under my house (basically a garage without a door as opposed to a external framed or lean-to type). The concrete floor has been painted with a gloss-like paint but I would like to cover it with external floor tiles (not paviours). The floor is not even enough for tiling so it will need a screed. Unfortunately we have to walk thru the carport to get to the front door so I will have to lay the screed about 1 metre at a time and use boards then wait to be able to walk on it before I lay the next metre. Can I use a bonded screed over the paint with a bonding agent or should I just use an unbonded screed over a pvc membrane? I don't want to go over 50mm thick. How long until I can walk on the untiled screed? How much water should I add to the mix? Whats the mix ratio for a 50mm screed? Should I use some sort of steel reinforcement in the screed? Any other advice?

Firstly no you cannot use any type of screed over a painted subfloor, the paint must be removed either by using a buffer with an abrasive pad, or scarifier. Secondly you will need to use a screed that is recommended for outdoor use. Thirdly you say you want to do this in 1 metre stages, I would recommend that you do the whole area in one go, most screeds are walkable in 3 or 4 hours ( well worth taking the time to do the job correctly ) Forth I would do this job in Two stages, firstly install the build up layer ( take it to within 5mm of your required finished level ) I would use a screed that you can mix an aggregate into, as many screeds only allow you to pour to a limited depth without using an aggregate, this will reduce your cost as aggregate is cheaper than screed. Fifth I would finish the job with a 5mm top layer of screed, this will give you the perfect finish. Most important, Check if the screed that you are about to use requires a primer, if it does, then this is a MUST DO I would check the Ardex web site for suitable product Good luck
