MDPE stopcock size query. To renew or re washer
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.16 PM
1984 house with MDPE Black 22mm o d mains under sink cupboard. Would like to replace valve during kitchen upgrade as it doesn’t shut off the supply fully. Could break down and re washer as there’s a good shut off outside but would prefer to renew. My vernier gauge measure it as 22mm od. I only see 20 or 25 mm sizes in my search so wondered if that was a size back then or is it 20 but out of shape a little. Couldn’t I just put a regular 22mm stopcock with the relevant liner on it. Thanks

The link below is an example of the fitting you need to fit to the existing Alkathene pipe then just
simply install a new 22mm stop cock and connect to your existing copper internal mains water service pipe.

Hey there, nowadays standard for plastic pipe conveying pipe from water meter is blue MDPE, in sizes of 25mm or 32mm.
What You've got there is probably black PE pipe. What you can do is converting that using
"MDPE Universal Transition Compression Fittings"
or there might be some other fitting on the market which would allow you to do the transition that I'm not aware of.
But yeah, don't try to put standard compression stopcock 22mm without putting "insert" in the pipe, it might squash pipe and leak even after some time.
All the best,

You can fit a new stop cock with an adapter to fit the old black pipe. Pretty simple job and will give you peace of mind.
