Outdoor Low Voltage Wiring Regs for a CCTV camera ?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.17 PM

I wish to position a low voltage CCTV camera on an outside shed about 40 ft from nearest outside socket on house. The plug/adapter states 50/60 Hz, 0.4A Max, Output 12V = 1000mA. Am I permitted to simply extend the 10 ft of cable supplied and run it along a nearby fence myself, or am I required to have it fitted by a certified electrician ? Appreciate any advice.

Hi, as the wiring is off a plug and its low voltage you can do it yourself if you feel you are competent, but I would be careful with extending low voltage cabling because the length may mean you have too much voltage drop and the camera won't work, also sometimes the cable is special shielded cable and its difficult to extend or if you cut the shielding it won't work properly. The best option would be to get a proper extension cable if the manufacturer supplies these.

Hi, I would reccomend not using the wire that comes with the camera and using cat5 with baluns. This single cable provide power and video over the one cable and can be run anywhere upto around 250metres. There is also various other ways of running the cable, in ducting underground, cable fixings so it spans overhead out of reach, or along walls or fencing in appropriate capping.
