Central Heating

Upgrading boiler from services 1 family bathroom to 2 and an ensuite

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

Hi, I bought an 3 bed victorian terrace with basements a while back. It has a Valiant Combi Boiler when i moved in which serviced the central heating on 2 floors and 1 family bathroom. It's getting to the point where it needs replacing (although I've havent had many problems with it). I'm wanting to added another bathroom in the loft and a shower in the basement aswell as getting a more efficient boiler. I have had a gas engineer to cap of a gas fire i had in the living room and whilst he was here he looked at the boiler. He mentioned that the size of the pipes wasnt the correct diameter i had for the current boiler. He mentioned that even if i go a new boiler that could support more than one bathroom and central heating across 4 floors i would need to replace central heating pipes with a bigger diameter. I've also done some reading about boiler options, and it looks like i switch over from needing a combi boiler that will do the job with the house the way it is at the moment, but i would need to different type of boiler to be able to service two or more bathrooms. Any advice that you can provide ahead of making my decision would be greatly appreciated, Thanks,

Hi Johny9 The system you would really need to run that many bathrooms at once would be a system boiler with a unvented hot water cylinder. The cylinder runs directly from your cold mains supply so is under pressure. It would still depend on how much your cold supply pressure coming in is and a good flow rate. Pipe sizing for the cold supply and hot really should be 22mm. Also with the heating side over 4 floors I think its a good idea to zone areas of heating. Instead of have one control/thermostat have 2 programmable thermostats 1 controlling say your living areas and one controlling the bedrooms.

Hi Johny I agree that the pipe size should be a 22mm flow and return but you can branch to the radiators in 15mm. You could fit a combi with a cylinder or storage tank combined in the same unit if you have space it may even go in the same place.
