Filling old waste pipe hole

Hi I have a an old waste pipe hole that's about 30 cm long going from an external brick wall all the way into a utility room. Someone said to just fill it all with mortar but not sure how to do it plus not sure it that's right as there may be a cavity wall. Or could i just fill about 5 cm either side of the holes? Any suggestions thanks

Yes you can just fill either side this way eliminating the possibilty of blocking a cavity
