Damp Proofing

Foisty/musty smell in house

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

I don't really know which tradesman I need, however..... There is a foisty/musty smell in my house, the worst room is the front bedroom (seems strongest towards the window/front). I have cleaned thoroughly and it has been decorated (I have no carpet yet). Is it possibly a problem under the floorboards? There are no obvious signs of damp anywhere. The floorboards are not wet. It has got worse since the weather has started warming up just recently. It’s awful and I’m worried it might be something serious (like rotting joists).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Possible causes in an upstairs room. Cavity wall insulation? Leaking bay window? Leaking roof or blocked gutter? Lack of trickle vents in double glazing/blocked chimney with no air brick? Sometimes plastic coatings applied to outside brick/render. Leaking radiator? Can cause a lot of damage over time. If you have no carpet ask a local builder or carpenter (on this site) to quote for lifting a couple of floorboards to check the joists. Hope this helps
