Horizontal cracking running along ceiling

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

Hi, I have recently purchased a flat in an older building which has been refurbished. After a few weeks I've started to notice some cracking along the ceiling. In the living room there is a horizontal crack running along the entire length of the room close to the wall with a step around the middle. There is also a similar looking crack running perpendicular to this across the ceiling (the two do not join as yet). The cracks aren't particularly wide, only 1-2mm, but are becoming more pronounced. Should I be worried about this? What could be the likely causes?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It’s likely during the refurbishment they installed new plasterboard on the ceilings and possibly new timbers above. These cracks will just be down to movement and nothing major. The way you have described the cracks it’s where plasterboard meets plasterboard (uniform cracks). A fill with a good quality filler and sand down prior to painting should suffice.
