What is the best solution to fill a gap between the concrete foundation and my front door?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.37 PM

Hello I am in the process of changing the flooring in my hallway from carpet to laminate. I have ripped up the carpet and removed the underlay that was there previously. I have noticed that there is gap between the concrete foundation which has plywood laid on top and where the front door is located. It appears the front door when fitted was moved forward from where it originally used to be hence the gap there. I can see bricks also where the edge of the gap is. I originally was under the impression I could just fill the gap with cement or some sort of floor leveling concrete but I am now unsure as to how I should fill up the gap. I have been told a variety of opinions from people regarding this. This is what Ive been told. 1: If you just fill it with cement/concrete moisture can get through the bricks and then through the cement/concrete which then will rot your new flooring. 2: To prevent moisture getting through cut to size a sheet of plastic and nail to the brickwork so that it absorbs the moisture. The rest of the gap can then be filled with expanding foam. Once its hardened get rid of any any excess to level it out and then you can place the underlay and laminate on top. Is this viewpoint correct? Is adding a plastic sheet with expanding foam the best solution to filling up the gap where my door is? If not what is the best solution to fill the gap? Kind regards.

No both sets of information are incorrect, if you fill the area with concrete you will need a mechanical DPM and a surface DPM which takes a minimum of four weeks to even test the moisture content in the sub-floor to spec what products need to be used, if you have this done incorrectly then the moisture will rise and cause the floor to fail (blow/over expand quickly) way before any rot occurs. Get in a professional to spec the work and advise and price accordingly, please do not attempt to do this work yourself a pin prick in the surface DPM is a failure.

Hi there go out side and check under the cill is siliconed properly and silicone the inside too, as this will stop any damp coming in, in the first place to allow you to fit your flooring,I never foam under a door as this eventually can break down and absorb water
