Electrical

The proposed electrics to my greenhouse using SWA

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.36 PM

From my house consumer unit to my green house ( 1 double socket ) and shed being the furthest ( 1 Double socket ) is 50 mtrs including in the run the garden double socket which is, off to one side, before the green house which 5 mtrs run. Keeping all the sockets in the same run ( ie doubling back to the green from garden socket house give the total run as 50. But separating the garden socket as a branch makes the longest run 40 mts . I cannot see how making the garden double socket as a branch is against the rules as I have been told simple. Ohms law ( know its a conductive cct ) says 40 mters is better than 50 mts run to the garden branch, taken on its own for calculation purposes, run is about 30 mts total. Please advise as I am getting conflicting information from people who have taken the same exams. The maximum power consumption at any give time will be 3 kw, if that. Also one contractor who gave a quote did all the calculations said if it was found not to be satisfy the current regulations any remedial work is at extra cost I find that odd as I would have thought the calculations and electrical measurements would be right when installed. I'm beginning to find conflicting advise and what make it easy for the installer and not what the customer wants frustrating. regards MJS

I’m a bit lost with this question. What size cable did they specify? Having not looked at it and purely off the top of my head I would run a 3 core armoured cable, formula to be applied to this to get sizing correct, RCD protected from the house con unit, in the shed put a small consumer unit in there( non Rcd) 3way perhaps then go away to the Other sockets( in armoured) with suitable circuit protection. Think this is a case of how you think it should be done and the way it should be done, after all, the electrician you are hopefully hiring is signing the test sheet and can’t make individual deviations from the regs. Otherwise if we all did this it would descend into chaos. The other bit I don’t get is the remedial work bit? Why would anybody say that for a new installation? It’s like snagging your own work and then charging the customer to put his mistakes right! Think this one is just guessing.
