Damp Proofing

Yeasty musty smell coming from between floor and skirting only when windows open

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.36 PM

Hello I live in a purpose built block of flats on the top floor. I have a concrete floor. There is a yeasty musty smell only on wet or damp days and only when the window is open in both the bedroom and the living room. The smell comes from between the skirting board and the floor on the shared wall between the living room and the bedroom. The smell also emanates from between the skirting board and the floor in the bedroom on the adjacant wall in the corner near the wall adjoining to the living room. It is peculiar in that it only smells when i open the window, yet it definitely comes from between the skirting board and the floor. It's like a fermenting, yeasty musty smell, yet the floor is concrete, and I live on the third floor. The flat is owned privately. Please can anyone offer any damp specialist help, thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Not possible to fully answer this question without a survey. May have to "pop" the skirting. This could relate to "boxed in guttering and downpipe" blocked or leaking. Over insulation (double glazing, external cladding, cavity wall insulation, fitted rubber backed carpet or laminate floor underlay) which create a sealed environment and condensation at colder lower levels from human activity. When the windows are opened, this allows mould spores to escape and create an odour. Hope this helps.
