Economy 7 boiler with timer - Any alternatives?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.36 PM

My apartment has a water cylinder with an economy 7 timer, which means I can only heat my water from something like 3-8am! As I don't want to be 'stung' for electricity during the day (I use most during the day to heat my house with electric heaters) I am not on an Economy 7 tariff, just a normal standard variable. Surely there is an alternative to having to heat my water for a fixed period at a fixed time?! Some days I barely use any of the hot water and others I use it all and then have to put on the immersion heater, which is expensive. I want to be able to choose how much water I heat, and when I heat it. Any solutions?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Replace E7 Timer with a suitable 24hr Immersion Time-clock, or you could incorporate a Smart Thermostat system and control via Smartphone?

A time switch with a manual over ride will allow you to choose the times you wish to heat the water, but choosing to heat the water during the low tarrif period will always be cheaper. There are non electrical alternatives such as solar heated water systems. These work by pumping water through tubes on the roof to raise the water temperature during the day, even if not sunny. My friend has one fitted and he doesn't spend much on heating water, though I appreciate you may not have roof access.
