Loft Conversion

Lowering ceiling joist

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

I'm having a loft conversion done and I'm changing the roof into a dormer. Because of lack of head room I had to lower the ceiling joist. The work it's going OK but I'm having a concern regarding how is the floor joist supported. I was expecting the floor joist to go from the new metal bar ( I don't recall the proper name) to the acknowledgement of the flat and sit on the main wall bricks, instead the builder drilled long wood joist parallel to the metal joist and I believe they want to make all the new floor joist sit on it. Is it this normal? Doesn't this pull the main wall inward?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depend on the span they should sit on low bearing wall if the span is to much you expect to se a steel beam in place , you should of had engineering calculations with your drawings , if you’ve had an architect design your loft conversion they should be following exacally what’s on the plan and should having building control to check work before anything is covered up , if you have any concerns call your Archectec or local building control ,
