Is it possible narrow existing stairs?

I have a small flight of stairs (5 steps in total) that I'd like to reduce the width of. They are a straight flight of stairs with no newel posts. The handrail bolts onto the stringer. Is there any way of cutting down the width of the stairs? Would it be as simple as unscrewing the risers, knocking out the supporting blocks, removing the outside stringer, cutting down the step width and then glueing/screwing everything back together? I've certainly made it sound simple here!! The risers are screwed to the back of the treads and the treads have been wedged and glued to the strings. Cheers

Yes is the answer to your question!! And providing the treads have only been screwed and not wedged and glued, otherwise it would be a simple matter of what you stated!! The other option would require using a jig and router to house out string!!
